Africa Talks will hold non-formal student-led discussions where there will be one chief speaker in certain events while the rest of the events will be an amalgamation of different students within the student body.
Our first session this year will discuss the surge in appreciation for the Amapiano genre recently and over the past 10 years: discussing what this appreciation means for Africa’s place in the musical world. This talk aims to fully appreciate and celebrate not just Amapiano, but the diverse African musical genres as a whole, and how it is vital to appreciate how far African music has come over the past 10 years.
Africa Talks’ second session titled: Echoes of Africa: A Visual Narrative draws inspiration from the Echoes of Africa film series done by the Academy Museum which aimed to weave together the tapestry of African experiences, triumphs, dreams, and realities. The leader of the talk, Siphephile Sibanyoni, is an award-winning freelance photographer who travels around Africa taking pictures of Africans in their most natural state aiming to celebrate their individual stories and their inherent beauty. The purpose of this talk is for Sibanyonyi to provide our student body with an account of her story, the story she aims to tell through her photojournalism, and her motivations as an African storyteller.
